Remember When?: GQ covers, Part I: 2010 and 2011.


Tonight we start a new series, remembering the glory days of men's fashion.  Our initial focus will be on GQ cover models.  Remember when GQ actually put stylish men on the cover?  No, I don't either.  The past few years has seen the proliferation of cover models whose style sense is, shall we say, questionable.  There are exceptions, of course; Lebron James comes to mind, for example.  But for the most part the world's most popular men's fashion magazine seems intent on prioritizing sales over substance; preferring subjects who are 'of the moment' (often fleetingly), regardless of their value to or impact on the fashion world, and then simply dressing them up.  Gone are the days when the man on the cover would be sporting his own wares; we instead see pop stars and teen icons wearing the most cliche and mainstream of labels.  It's hard to blame GQ; they are, after all, running a business, and if readers prefer pop stars to men with class (so often mutually exclusive), then I guess they have to give the people what they want.  So sad.  

I'm a big fan of saving the best for last, and getting the bullshit out of the way first.  So, naturally, this means we will be starting with the present-day and working backwards.  It would in theory be easier to pinpoint where it all started to go wrong by starting at the beginning and going in sequence, but then we would be in the awkward position of building up to the shittiest of the shitty instead of the best of the best.  So, without further adieu, I present to you, 2010 and 2011 (thus far).
January 2010.  GQ knows sex sells, Exhibit A.  Did anyone else read her interview?  She comes off as an incredibly dumb individual.
February 2010.  OK, so J-Depp has style.  But topless?  GQ knows sex sells, Exhibit B.
March 2010.  Kobe's got style too.  No complaints here.
April 2010.  Again, really?  Teeny-bopper obsession, Exhibit A.
May 2010.  Questionable choice, but I love Gyllenhaal, and love chambray even more, so I can forgive it.
June 2010.  GQ knows sex sells, Exhibit C.  Talk about a flash-in-the-pan.  Admittedly a damn hot flash, though.
July 2010.  Ugh.  Teeny-bopper obsession, Exhibit B.
August 2011.  Paul Rudd and Zack Galifianakis were also cover-boys.  Is there a less-stylish individual than Tracy Morgan?
September 2010.  Lebron is indeed a style icon, and this suit kicks ass.  No complaints, except for his too-soon cover repeat.
October 2010.  Can't call this an example of teeny-bopper obsession, although it is definitely geared towards that crowd.
November 2010.  GQ hits a new low.  Teen-bopper obsession, Exhibit C; GQ knows sex sells, Exhibit D.
December 2010.  GQ knows sex sells, Exhibit E.  And yet, no complaints...
January 2011.  Gosling is awesome.  No complaints.
February 2011.  Can't argue with this selection.  2011 is looking brighter...
March 2011.  Hmm...questionable at best.
April 2011.  Oh look; GQ found a less-stylish dude than Tracy Morgan.
May 2011.  OK, so Galifianakis is awesome, but deserving of two covers within ten months?
